dmm-nomad-11-8mm-lanyard
DMM Nomad and Nomad+ 11.8mm Lanyard

The versatility of the Nomad work positioning lanyard is illustrated by the wide variety of certified configurations available.

Single mode configuration can significantly increase the working length of the lanyard, with the Triple Attachment Pulley 2 (TAP 2) connected to the bridge of the harness (work positioning and suspension) for example and the Director connected to the Fidus 6.5mm Loop.

This gives a clean connection and avoids choking round the anchor, alleviating the risk of cross loading the connector, inadvertent gate opening and friction damage to the cambium in the case of a tree branch.

The number of connections at the harness is reduced and there are potential improved ergonomics for the user, particularly when rotating through 90 degrees on the bridge, allied to reducing the chance of conflict between the Ultra O/PerfectO connector and the user's body and/or harness.

The Nomad can also be used in doubled mode, with one point of attachment to the bridge, via the termination connector attached back to the TAP 2. This maintains a 2:1 mechanical advantage ‘compact' climbing system, once again giving improved ergonomics, especially when rotating through 90 degrees on the bridge. Such movement again means there is less chance of conflict between the Ultra O/PerfectO connector and the climber's body and/or harness.

A simple doubled configuration is using the lanyard around the anchor point, with just the Fidus 6.5mm Loop and Director, to connect to the bridge/ventral attachment.

Doubled mode with two points of attachment for work positioning including suspension, can be used when simultaneously connected to the EN813 harness attachment points—as in the forward Ds on the Kinisi harness—permitting the user to be suspended in a ‘trapeze' configuration, thereby removing/reducing compression forces on the user's hips.

Attached like this, the connectors are less likely to come into contact with the user's body and/or harness, compared to when side attachments are used—particularly when rotating through 90 degrees on the rope bridge.

The side rings of the Kinisi can similarly be used for work positioning but where there is no chance of suspension (EN358). This is ideal for work positioning on spikes, particularly stems with a larger diameter, improving comfort and ergonomics. It also enables the user to organise systems, reducing potential conflict when additional systems are attached to the rope bridge and/or forward Ds.

Using a single lanyard in two doubled configurations can be used for connection to two anchor points in a structure: essentially quadrupled. Such a dual system gives improved work positioning and reduces the likelihood of a pendulum swing during system change overs, for example when working in the outer canopy.

Further fall protection systems can be attached using the additional holes in TAP 2 for more positioning options (stacking lanyards) with the same benefits as the quadrupled setup.

The Nomad can be used as an EN795 anchor in a rescue scenario permitting two person use and a maximum load of 300kg. Either a single stopper knot or alpine butterfly must be tied within 10cm of the pulley.

When connected to an EN358 harness/belt attachment point such as on the rear of a Kinisi harness, the Nomad can also be used for restraint only—not for work positioning or suspension—to prevent a user entering an area where there is the potential to fall, as at the top of a cliff or steep ground. It enables the user to face forward and observe other operatives below from steep ground.

The full length of the lanyard can be used with end-to-end connection or around an anchor with two points of attachment to the user (forward Ds or side rings).

As part of the Ultra O and Triple Attachment Pulley 2 assembly, the Nomad has been certified for tying the Fidus 8.5mm Eye to Eye with either a VT 5+2, Distel 5+1 or Schwabisch friction hitch.

It's important to note that the 12.8mm and 11.8mm lanyards are certified with a specific length of Eye to Eye hitch cord: 67cm (12.8mm Nomad) and 65.5cm (11.8mm Nomad).

The key difference between the standard DMM Nomad and the Nomad+ is the inclusion of specific, advanced connectors in the "+" system.
